Dose Rate

Representative sediment or solid rock samples are analysed in the laboratory by means of low level γ-spectrometry, α- or β-counting or via radiochemical methods. The latter encompass Neutron Activation Analyses (NAA), α-spectrometry, Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) and Atom Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). These provide radioelement resp. nuclide concentrations, which can be converted into dose rate with tabulated conversion factors.  In this laboratory, we use α-counting (U, Th) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES; K) for dose rate determination.
